What Is Chalk Paint?

It seems you can’t go anywhere around the DIY blogosphere without hearing about Chalk Paint.  So if you’re not familiar with it and you have been wondering what is chalk paint? –  then stick around.

First of all, let’s not get this mixed up with “chalkboard” paint.  They are very similar but chalkboard paint is simply for that…turning a painted surface into a chalkboard.

Chalk paint is different and can be used for a variety of painting projects.  Best of all it is easy to use, but let’s see what else it is.

Chalk Paint was developed by Annie Sloan as a way to apply many different styles and painting techniques using the same paint.  Chalk Paint can be used as a lime wash, to add a textured surface, an aged patina, a distressed finish and just about anything you can want to dream up.

  • Goes on easy and smooth on almost any surface
  • Covers quickly
  • Can use it thinned as a wash or thick as a textured look
  • Can be made to crackle for an old world effect
  • No need for sanding, priming or other prep work
  • Dries fast
  • Can be used on walls and floors
  • Easy to distress
  • Leaves a beautiful chalky patina
  • Easy to add waxes and stains for an aged, antique patina

  • Fairly Expensive
  • Not available everywhere
  • That’s about it :)

Chalk Paint is an amazing substance.  If you are into painting furniture there is simply no better paint that you can get.  If you are into distressing furniture and adding faux, aged looks to your furniture projects then you are in heaven.

If you have never used Chalk Paint then give it a try.  If you are a DIY person at heart then you are going to love it!
